
The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), is the sole international voice for physical therapy, representing more than 600,000 physical therapists worldwide through its 129 member organizations. The WCPT operates as a non-profit organization and is registered as a charity in the UK.

Speaker of the Seminar

Dr Arto Pesola works as a director of Active Life Lab in South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. In his research, Dr Pesola has combined novel technological solutions (like EMG, real-time strength training data) to improve understanding of physical activity and health, and to promote physical activity in children, adults and elderly. His research has attracted a significant volume of research funding (>1.9 m€ within the last four years) and resulted in more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Dr Pesola worked as an invited expert member in a working group for the first sedentary behaviour recommendations for Finnish population at Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. In 2017, Dr Pesola was awarded as the best young investigator by the Finnish Society for Sports Science.

Dr Tuire Karaharju-Huisman graduated as a physiotherapist in Finland. After two years of clinical work in private practice she pursued her research ambition at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden, investigating walking and balance in children with neurological defects. Moving to Melbourne refocused her research interest to falls prevention in older people, with her doctoral dissertation investigating slipping risk during level walking. After 11 years as an academic lecturer of biomechanics, rehabilitation, and exercise physiology, Tuire joined HUR Australia in 2015. With her clinical, academic and research experience, she brings expertise in the design and implementation of best practice exercise solutions in rehabilitation and active ageing. Tuire has an active role in HUR education and is the producer of HUR Australia Newsletters. Tuire initiated HUR Australia Webinars that have reached a worldwide audience over 20 countries, collaborating with world leading researchers. on best practice for health and wellness for older people.
